XXY - 2007

XXY is a 2007 Argentine film written and directed by Lucía Puenzo. The film stars Ricardo Darín, Valeria Bertuccelli, Inés Efron and Martín Piroyansky. It tells the story of a 15-year-old intersex person, the way her family copes with her condition and the ultimate decision that she must eventually make as she explores her sexuality.

XXY has received widespread critical acclaim, winning the Critics' Week grand prize at the 2007 Cannes film festival, as well as the ACID/CCAS Support Award.[1] It was nominated for eight awards at the 2008 Argentine Film Critics Association Awards, and was nominated or won awards at a number of other foreign film festivals. It was chosen to close the 2008 Melbourne Queer Film Festival.

The film's title is a reference to Klinefelter's Syndrome, also known as XXY Syndrome, a condition in which males have an extra X sex chromosome.

This Is Spinal Tap -  1984

This Is Spın̈al Tap (officially spelled with a non-functional umlaut over the letter n and a dotless i) is a 1984 mock rockumentary directed by Rob Reiner and starring members of the fictional heavy-metal/hard rock band Spinal Tap. The film satirizes the wild personal behavior and musical pretensions of hard-rock and heavy-metal bands, as well as the hagiographic tendencies of rockumentaries of the time.

Despite Reiner and the three main stars being credited as the writers of the film, much of it was ad libbed, and several dozen hours of footage were shot before Reiner edited it down to the released film. A 4½ hour bootleg version of the film exists and has been traded among fans and collectors for years.[1]

The three core members of Spinal Tap—David St. Hubbins, Derek Smalls and Nigel Tufnel—are portrayed by the American actors Michael McKean and Harry Shearer and British American Christopher Guest respectively. The three actors actually play their musical instruments and speak with a credible English accent throughout the film. Reiner appears as Marty DiBergi, the maker of the documentary. Other actors in the film are Tony Hendra as the group manager Ian Faith and June Chadwick as St. Hubbins' interfering girlfriend Jeanine. Actors Paul Shaffer, Fred Willard, Fran Drescher, Bruno Kirby, Howard Hesseman, Ed Begley, Jr., Patrick Macnee, Anjelica Huston, Dana Carvey and Billy Crystal all play supporting roles or make cameo appearances in the film. Scream queen starlet Brinke Stevens appears in an uncredited cameo as a groupie of the band in an early scene set in a hotel room.

Sliding Doors - 1998

The film follows the life of Helen Quilley (Paltrow), who is fired from her public relations job. The film's plot splits into two parallel universes which run in tandem. In one universe, Helen manages to catch a London Underground train home on time, and in the other she misses it.

In the first scenario (the parallel universe), she gets home in time to catch her boyfriend Gerry (Lynch) red-handed with his ex-girlfriend Lydia (Tripplehorn); she promptly dumps him, and meets (and falls in love with) a new man James (Hannah). Helen met James on the underground, where he engages in discussion with her, including references to pop culture icons like the Beatles and Monty Python.

In the second scenario (reality), she misses the train and tries to catch a cab. While hailing a taxi, Helen falls victim to an attempted mugging. Helen hits her head in the scuffle and is taken to the hospital. She arrives home late, giving Lydia time to leave. Helen carries on oblivious in a miserable relationship with Gerry, working several part-time jobs to pay the bills. Meanwhile, Gerry tries to cover up his infidelity and deal with two women and Lydia interacts with Helen on several occasions. Helen discovers she's pregnant with Gerry's baby, but cannot find the time to tell him.

In the first scenario (parallel universe), Helen discovers she's pregnant with James' child and goes to see him at his office. She is stunned to learn from James' secretary that he has a wife. Upset, Helen disappears. James searches for her and finds her on a bridge, explaining he was married, is separated and soon to be divorced, and that his former wife is maintaining a cordial relationship with him for the sake of his ill mother.

La Haine - 1995

The film tells the story of three young friends in an impoverished multi-ethnic housing project (a ZUP - zone à urbaniser en priorité) in the aftermath of a great riot. Vince (Vincent Cassel), who is Jewish, is filled with rage. He sees himself as a gangster ready to win respect by killing a cop, and models himself after Travis Bickle from the film Taxi Driver. Saïd - Sayid in some English subtitles - (Saïd Taghmaoui) is a happy and talkative Maghrebin who tries to find middle ground between his two friends' response to life. Hubert (Hubert Koundé) is an Afro-French boxer and drug dealer. Most quiet of the three, he sadly contemplates the ghetto and the hate around him. He is probably the only one who has a minimum of consciousness about the state of things. He wants to simply leave this decadent world of violence and hate behind him but doesn't know how since he lacks the means to do it. A friend of theirs, Abdel Ichaha, has been brutalized by the police after the riot and lies in a coma. Vince finds a policeman's revolver, lost in the riots. He vows that if their friend dies from his injuries, he will use it to kill a cop.

Linha De Passe  - 2008

Winner for Best Actress (Sandra Corveloni) at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival , Linha de Passe takes a look at poor Sao Paulo youth’s limited options through the lives of four brothers with the same mother but different fathers who aspire to be football players. By focusing on fatherless boys trying to make their way in life without resorting to criminality, the atmospheric film consciously positions itself as an alternative to flashier recent Brasillian fare steeped in drugs and death, and addresses serious issues without insisting on its own self-importance. Directed by Walter Selles (“Diarios de motocicleta/The Motorcycle Diaries, Central do Brasil/Central Station”)

Central Station  - 1998

Dora is a former school teacher who is now a bitter old woman. She works at Rio de Janeiro's Central Station, writing letters for illiterate customers in exchange for some money. She hates her customers, and does not mail the letters she writes, putting them in a drawer or even tearing them apart. Josué is a poor 9-year-old boy who has never met with his father but hopes to do so. His mother sends letters to his father through Dora, saying that she hopes to reunite with him soon, but when she is run over and killed in a bus accident in the station, is left helpless. Dora takes him in and sells him, but encouraged by her neighbor and friend Irene, later steals him back.

Dora is initially reluctant to be responsible for the boy, but she ends up deciding to take a trip with him to Nordeste, in order to find his father's house and leave him there.

Dora tries to leave Josué on the bus but he follows her, forgetting his rucksack which contains Dora's money. Penniless, they are picked up by a kindly, religious truck driver who abandons them when Dora grows too friendly. Dora trades her watch for a ride to Bom Jesus on the back of a truck. They find the only address Josué's mother had for his father in Bom Jesus, but the current residents say that Jesus won a house in the lottery, and now lives in the new settlements; but they also say that he lost the house and money through drinking. With no money, Josué saves them from destitution by suggesting Dora write letters for the pilgrims who have arrived in Bom Jesus for a massive pilgrimage. This time she posts the letters. ...
