This is a short guide to search for digitized book on the web (http), not p2p or anywhere else.
In general all modern books that are available for ebook devices, has been scannned by on organization of another, or important technicals book should be available online one way or another. Most are available in .pdf or djvu format. the more recent the books the higher the digital quality. Big technical publication hosues (springer-verlag, McGraw-hill, prentice hall, Willey) all sell digital formats of their books.
widely posted subjects: computer science, medical students texbook, engineering, chemistry. Followed by core science and engineering items. Math, physics, main engineering branches. Books that are connected to undergraduate textbooks, industrial needs, common research references are commonly available. Another area are Do-it-yourself type (explosive, farming, garage mechanics/machinaries). Lastly are popular businessbooks and popular classical literature.
Software one would need: .rar, .pdf, sometimes .dvju or hjsplit (to combined non .rar split file)
general method to search:
- things you need: Book title, author, publisher, keywords
- Obtain most commonly used keywords, lingo, or general semantic in area you wish to find book in. Go to amazon.com find most popular books in the subject then extract "keywords" and summary listed in the page. This will help narrow google search a great deal. (Or you could simply list amazon.com book titles and search them one by one.)
- After keywords are found, one simply google for book titles. Enter: "book title" + ".rar" (common google hack trick to ask google to find any site that offer .rar files, the most common compression file for ebook.)
- scan the google pages patiently. You can skip same rapidshare "link addresses" they are just same link posted by different sites. go 3-4 pages. A lot fo time the first or second links have been snuffed. So you need to scan further down. (don't skip non english sites. Chinese & arabics usually contains different mirror links)
- If it is a large file that containes several parts of .rar components, make sure all the files parts are available before start downloading. (it's drag finding out after downloading 9 parts and 10th is dead). Also make sure you have the password.
- missing password. Simply google exact "file name". Most of the time you will find another site who post the same link + the password. (there aren't that many book psoters, almsot everybody uses the exact same 2 or 3 rapidshare links)
- typical order for searching: specialized ebook site, google, specialized rapidshare search, blogsearch engine and finally torrent search sites.
- bit torrent files usually is the main-source and master list of all posted rapidshare files. so when it's available in torrent, you know it has been digitized.
