Summary: A unique old book on the electronics behind synthesizers
This is one of those old TAB electronic books that cost only eight dollars when it was first published in 1975. This book has detailed circuit diagrams for percussion generators, voltage-controlled oscillators, ring modulators, envelope shapers, and quite a few other peripheral items. Apparently the material in this book was borrowed extensively from PAIA Electronics and the material supplied with their Gnome and 2700 synthesizer kits back in the day. Here is a description of the book from the context of its table of contents:
1. An Introduction to Electronic Sound - Contains a basic treatment of what sound means quantitatively and introduces you to the instruments and devices that are detailed in the rest of this book.
2. Experimenter's Circuits - Develops a large number of sound source and sound treatment circuits that you can build in breadboard form. Detailed circuit diagrams are shown along with theory of operation as well as the waveform you can expect to see emitted from each device.
3. Understanding Audio Synthesis - Goes into detail on more complex devices, including devices within the Gnome synthesizer. It does a good job of joining the electronics of each part with the actual music produced.
4. Operation and Patching Setup - This has to do with the Gnome control panel, what all of the controls do, and what kind of sound you can expect by specific adjustments.
5. Synthesizer Design and Operational Considerations - Discusses the voltage controlled amplifier, the voltage controlled oscillator, filters, function generators, the control oscillator and noise source, power supply, envelope follower/trigger, and the sine converter/pulse width modulator in detail. In the case of each device there is a design analysis, schematic, testing procedure, and how to use each device. All of these discussions are on the transistor level, and yes, there are lots of transistors in these circuits.
6. Electronic Piano - This chapter has complete details on the construction and operation of an electronic piano from basic electronic parts that you can easily find.
7. Sequencers - The final chapter discusses the electronic and operational details of the random-tune sequencer and the programmed-sequence rhythm generator.
The appendix contains details on the old 2720 synthesizer keyboard.
All in all, this is a great and unique little book. You need to already know music and electronics in order to really get anything out of it. Even if you don't intend to build any of the devices mentioned, it gives a great and detailed explanation on the operation of electronic music devices. Highly recommended

At over 300 pages, Mastering Audio — The Art And The Science is written by Bob Katz and published by Focal Press. The author is probably already familiar to most people reading this, but for those who haven't come across the name before, he is one of the best-known and most highly regarded mastering engineers in the USA. He also appears to be very well connected, as there are numerous short contributions in the book from many fellow mastering engineers and producers. The topic of mastering is a hugely diverse and surprisingly complicated one, involving — as the book's subtitle suggests — both art and science, in roughly equal proportions. But whereas it is relatively easy to define, explain and document the scientific and procedural aspects of mastering, trying to get across a meaningful impression of the art and aesthetics involved in music mastering is a much harder challenge. I'm pleased to report that Bob Katz has managed to progress much, much further in the latter than the authors of any previous book on mastering that I have read — and I've waded through a fair stack in my time.
While many books ostensibly about music mastering discuss the technology involved, Katz talks primarily about how to use the technology, with practical advice and examples in many cases, and all with such down-to-earth common sense and logical argument that even complex issues seem obvious. Best of all, Katz is clearly a man who likes the sound of music — pretty much any music — for its own sake, and is a vehement defender of real musical dynamics.
A good impression of the level of detail to be found in this book is presented on the very first flyleaf of the book. A fold-out reproduction is provided of a hand-drawn chart made by EJ Quinby at Carnegie Hall in 1941, showing the relation between musical pitch and notation, frequency, and the ranges of all the instruments of the orchestra, singing voices, piano and organ. It is a work of art in its own right, but the information it conveys actually underpins much of what this book is all about.

Summary: Good book on the mathematics of acoustics for engineers

This book is aimed squarely at engineering students who want to learn the mathematics of acoustics. There is very little in the realm of standing back and asking “So what does this all mean?”. From the very first chapter the author dives into deriving equations that use calculus, Laplace transforms, the Fourier series and transform, circuit analysis, digital filters, and the Z- transform as well as some differential equations. There are few examples in the book, but there are problem sets that expect you to understand the theory and math well enough to apply it numerically with more intuitive knowledge than is presented. It can be done, but you’ll have to read carefully when doing the exercises to figure out how to get from A to B. If you are interested in acoustics this is probably an essential reference pertaining to the mathematical aspects of the science, but you’ll need other books to get the big picture. I’d recommend the old Schaum’s Outline of Acoustics by Seto as a companion to this book since it has lots of examples. Unfortunately, it is out of print and you’ll probably have to hunt for it.

When one listens to music at home, one would like to have an acoustic impression close to that of being in the concert hall. Until recently this meant elaborate multi-channelled sound systems with 5 or more speakers. But head-related stereophony achieves the surround-sound effect in living room with only two loudspeakers. By virtue of their slight directivity as well as an electronic filter the limitations previously common to two-speaker systems can be overcome and this holds for any arbitrary two-channel recording. The book also investigates the question of how a wide and diffuse sound image can arise in concert halls and shows that the quality of concert halls decisively depends on diffuse sound images arising in the onset of reverberation. For this purpose a strong onset of reverberation is modified in an anechoic chamber by electroacoustic means. Acoustics and Hearing proposes ideas concerning signal processing in the auditory system that explain the measured results and the resultant sound effects pleasing to the audience.
