This Is Spinal Tap -  1984

This Is Spın̈al Tap (officially spelled with a non-functional umlaut over the letter n and a dotless i) is a 1984 mock rockumentary directed by Rob Reiner and starring members of the fictional heavy-metal/hard rock band Spinal Tap. The film satirizes the wild personal behavior and musical pretensions of hard-rock and heavy-metal bands, as well as the hagiographic tendencies of rockumentaries of the time.

Despite Reiner and the three main stars being credited as the writers of the film, much of it was ad libbed, and several dozen hours of footage were shot before Reiner edited it down to the released film. A 4½ hour bootleg version of the film exists and has been traded among fans and collectors for years.[1]

The three core members of Spinal Tap—David St. Hubbins, Derek Smalls and Nigel Tufnel—are portrayed by the American actors Michael McKean and Harry Shearer and British American Christopher Guest respectively. The three actors actually play their musical instruments and speak with a credible English accent throughout the film. Reiner appears as Marty DiBergi, the maker of the documentary. Other actors in the film are Tony Hendra as the group manager Ian Faith and June Chadwick as St. Hubbins' interfering girlfriend Jeanine. Actors Paul Shaffer, Fred Willard, Fran Drescher, Bruno Kirby, Howard Hesseman, Ed Begley, Jr., Patrick Macnee, Anjelica Huston, Dana Carvey and Billy Crystal all play supporting roles or make cameo appearances in the film. Scream queen starlet Brinke Stevens appears in an uncredited cameo as a groupie of the band in an early scene set in a hotel room.

Sliding Doors - 1998

The film follows the life of Helen Quilley (Paltrow), who is fired from her public relations job. The film's plot splits into two parallel universes which run in tandem. In one universe, Helen manages to catch a London Underground train home on time, and in the other she misses it.

In the first scenario (the parallel universe), she gets home in time to catch her boyfriend Gerry (Lynch) red-handed with his ex-girlfriend Lydia (Tripplehorn); she promptly dumps him, and meets (and falls in love with) a new man James (Hannah). Helen met James on the underground, where he engages in discussion with her, including references to pop culture icons like the Beatles and Monty Python.

In the second scenario (reality), she misses the train and tries to catch a cab. While hailing a taxi, Helen falls victim to an attempted mugging. Helen hits her head in the scuffle and is taken to the hospital. She arrives home late, giving Lydia time to leave. Helen carries on oblivious in a miserable relationship with Gerry, working several part-time jobs to pay the bills. Meanwhile, Gerry tries to cover up his infidelity and deal with two women and Lydia interacts with Helen on several occasions. Helen discovers she's pregnant with Gerry's baby, but cannot find the time to tell him.

In the first scenario (parallel universe), Helen discovers she's pregnant with James' child and goes to see him at his office. She is stunned to learn from James' secretary that he has a wife. Upset, Helen disappears. James searches for her and finds her on a bridge, explaining he was married, is separated and soon to be divorced, and that his former wife is maintaining a cordial relationship with him for the sake of his ill mother.

La Haine - 1995

The film tells the story of three young friends in an impoverished multi-ethnic housing project (a ZUP - zone à urbaniser en priorité) in the aftermath of a great riot. Vince (Vincent Cassel), who is Jewish, is filled with rage. He sees himself as a gangster ready to win respect by killing a cop, and models himself after Travis Bickle from the film Taxi Driver. Saïd - Sayid in some English subtitles - (Saïd Taghmaoui) is a happy and talkative Maghrebin who tries to find middle ground between his two friends' response to life. Hubert (Hubert Koundé) is an Afro-French boxer and drug dealer. Most quiet of the three, he sadly contemplates the ghetto and the hate around him. He is probably the only one who has a minimum of consciousness about the state of things. He wants to simply leave this decadent world of violence and hate behind him but doesn't know how since he lacks the means to do it. A friend of theirs, Abdel Ichaha, has been brutalized by the police after the riot and lies in a coma. Vince finds a policeman's revolver, lost in the riots. He vows that if their friend dies from his injuries, he will use it to kill a cop.

Linha De Passe  - 2008

Winner for Best Actress (Sandra Corveloni) at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival , Linha de Passe takes a look at poor Sao Paulo youth’s limited options through the lives of four brothers with the same mother but different fathers who aspire to be football players. By focusing on fatherless boys trying to make their way in life without resorting to criminality, the atmospheric film consciously positions itself as an alternative to flashier recent Brasillian fare steeped in drugs and death, and addresses serious issues without insisting on its own self-importance. Directed by Walter Selles (“Diarios de motocicleta/The Motorcycle Diaries, Central do Brasil/Central Station”)

Naked - 1993

Naked is a 1993 British film directed by Mike Leigh. Before this film, Leigh was known for more-low-key, subtler comedic dissections of middle-class and working-class manners. Naked was more stark and brutal than his previous works. Leigh relied heavily on improvisation in the making of the movie, but little actual ad-libbing was filmed; lengthy rehearsals in character provided much of the script. Almost all of the dialogue was filmed as written.

Trainspotting - 1996

Trainspotting is a 1996 British film directed by Danny Boyle based on the novel of the same name by Irvine Welsh. The movie follows a group of heroin addicts in early 1990s economically-depressed Edinburgh and their passage through life.[1]

The film stars Ewan McGregor as Mark Renton, Ewen Bremner as Spud, Jonny Lee Miller as Sick Boy, Kevin McKidd as Tommy, Robert Carlyle as Begbie and Kelly Macdonald as Diane. Author Irvine Welsh also has a brief appearance as hapless drug dealer Mikey Forrester.

The Academy Award-nominated screenplay, by John Hodge, was adapted from Welsh's novel. It does not contain any references to the non-drug-related hobby of train spotting. The title is a reference to an episode in the original book (not included in the film) where Begbie and Renton meet "an auld drunkard", who turns out to be Begbie's estranged father, in the disused Leith Central railway station, which they are visiting to use as a toilet. He asks them if they are "trainspottin'".[2] The title also relates to obsessive behavior (drug addicts obsess about getting their next fix just as trainspotters obsess about collecting train numbers) and to a slang term to inject heroin or "Mainline" it. Beyond drug addiction, other concurrent themes in the film are exploration of the urban poverty and squalor, in 'culturally rich' Edinburgh [3]

The film has since developed a cult following[4] and has been ranked 10th spot by the British Film Institute (BFI) in its list of Top 100 British films of all time.[5] It was also part of a cluster of motion pictures that some claimed glamorized the gritty lifestyle of opiate addiction to a mainstream audience and also included Pulp Fiction (1994) and The Basketball Diaries (1995). The success of these films revealed that the heroin culture, although dark and forbidden, was equally fascinating. It demonstrated that the American public hungered for glimpses into heroin's dark and mysterious culture.

Annie Hall - 1977

Annie Hall is a 1977 romantic comedy film directed by Woody Allen from a script co-written with Marshall Brickman. One of Allen's most popular films, it won numerous awards at the time of its release, including four Academy Awards, and in 2002 Roger Ebert referred to it as "just about everyone's favorite Woody Allen movie".[1]

Allen had previously been known as a maker of zany comedies; the director has described Annie Hall as "a major turning point",[2] as it brought a new level of seriousness to his work, in addition to consolidating his signature cinematic style, which includes long, realistically written scenes of conversation, often shot in uninterrupted takes, and an equal thematic investment in both hilarity and heartbreak.[1]

Adrift in Tokyo - 2008

“To see Tokyo in all it’s wacky and scenic splendor, take a long walk with Tenten (a.k.a. Adrift in Tokyo). The latest from director Miki Satoshi (Insects Unlisted in the Encyclopedia ), Tenten is a brilliantly manic road comedy starring the unbeatable tag team of Odagiri Joe (Tokyo Tower - Mom Me, and Sometimes Dad) and Miura Tomokazu (The Taste of Tea). Both actors are playing roles they could do in their sleep - prickly middle-ager and slacker student with unfortunate hair - and they bring the exact combination of calm calamity and charismatic craziness the film calls for. In the grand tradition of male bonding road movies, Tenten is just the aimless story of two strange guys walking around Tokyo for a few days and the stranger adventures they encounter - and yet, it’s so much more. Underachieving law student Takemura (Odagiri Joe) - on his eighth year and counting - has racked up quite a sizable debt in the name of higher education. The urgency of his financial situation announces itself in the form of hot-tempered debt collector Fukuhara (Miura Tomokazu), who comes bursting into his apartment one night demanding payment and threatening painful repercussions. Short of hitting it big on pachinko, Takemura has no idea how he can possibly pay back the sum. As the deadline closes in, Fukuhara makes Takemura an unexpected proposition: walk with him from Kichijoji (in western Tokyo) to Kasumigaseki (in central Tokyo), and he’ll pay the indebted student one million yen, enough to cover his debt. Bewildered but in no position to argue, Takemura hits the road with Fukuhara who, it turns out, just killed his wife and wants to turn himself in at a specific police station in Kasumigaseki. Getting there will take some time though, because many wacky people (including Koizumi Kyoko as a club madam) and surprise detours await them on the road in between.”

La Faute à Fidel! - 2006

A 9-year-old girl, Anna de la Mesa (played by Nina Kervel), weathers big changes in her household as her parents become radical political activists in 1970-71 Paris. Her Spanish-born lawyer father Fernando (played by Stefano Accorsi) is inspired by his family's opposition to Franco and Salvador Allende's victory in Chile; he quits his job and becomes a liaison for Chilean activists in France. Her mother, a Marie Claire journalist-turned-writer documenting the stories of women's abortion ordeals, supports her husband and climbs aboard the ideological bandwagon. As a result, Anna's French bourgeois life is over. She must adjust to refugee nannies, international cuisine and a cramped apartment full of noisy revolutionaries.
The film is filled with a dizzying array of philosophy and ideology - everything from Communism to Catholicism to Greek and Asian mythology - which Anna must reconstruct from confusion to her own set of beliefs. As she negotiates her way through this ideological maze until ultimate internalisation of her parents' admirable (albeit ad-hoc administered) objectives, we are exposed to a witty analysis of stereotyping, misinformation, the potential hypocrisies of ideologies and the potential false hopes of idealism.
