Squashed --
We would like to be listed on Hype Machine so we can attract more readers. Their requirements are:
1. Advocates responsible use of copyright material, includes buy links in the posts, does not post unauthorized works.
2. Regularly posts updates, generates discussion
3. Has a working, valid RSS/Atom feed.
We think we are doing OK with #1.
We post regularly, but how do we generate discussion when we have 20 readers or less per day (according to Site Meter you recommended)? Both of us often read other blogs and post comments. We get a few visits from this, but very few comments.
What is a working, valid RSS/Atom feed?
We followed your advice about Technorati. Is that one?
Thanks,
|

meh, that's Anthony with his ultra hip requirement. nobody knows what "discussion" is online.. heh
anyway,
- to check if your feed is working (RSS), if Technorati is reading you. That means it's working.
-I highly recommend you register to "feedburner". Some people like using their feed better than RSS. On top of that, they also have good ping service.
- How to get to Hypemachine. In general it's fairly vague since it's done by hand/semi automatic. HM is not some gigantic corporation, it's a personal project. I'll try to talk to Antony to include your blog, I think he'll consider it.
but if he is not available, in general HM likes:
1. stable blog. has been around at least 1-2 months and psot regularly
2. good design
3. not album poster
4. on bigger blog blogroll, or has been mentioned in bigger blog, or Elbow discussion forum.
in general just go around until bigger blog notice ya. (I'll try to mention your blog in BF, maybe that'll do the trick. some blog get on HM list that way)
cheers.

Thanks for these tips...Squashed--
I saw your comment on the blog too. I will go ahead and sign up with Feedburner this weekend and get Indie Mom (she's the web-brains of our outfit) to put the icon up on the page. I did not understand what this was, but I have a little better idea about it now.
We are still beginners, but I think we are posting as good music as some others on Hype who are also pretty new. We are not professional music people, and we will never be the first ones with the new Shins' album (LOL), but we still have good things to offer. I am happy this week that I introduced someone to Oingo Boingo!
I go around and read other blogs and make comments, and we get some traffic that way. Yellow Stereo, CYSTS, and Berkeley Place link to us, and we get some visits from those links.
Thank you SO much for being willing to help us with Hype. Since we can't do this today, I will come back to this forum and post you a message when we are ready.

Ah! Look!I am not at home today, but I had some time and a computer, so I went to Feedburner. Apparently Blogger gives some difficulties, but I managed to get through them and burn a feed.
I sent Indie Mom the site with the directions to change the feed of our Blogger template and put the Feedburner icon on our site.
The feed address will be: http://feeds.feedburner.com/SpeedOfDark

heya a-g.
- feedburner is a usefull little service on the net. It tracks fee better. (Plus it has better statistic)
- The shins album. Sub-pop is coming down hard on whoever posting the leak. So be carefull. They really don't like it because the leak messes up their pre-release schedule. Word goes around there is general boycott on the blog because they are coming down on Hypemachine... but this sort of thing never hold.
- I emailed Anthony (The Hypemachine dude, nice person) Anyway, just let it roll and I'll email him again next week. He usually is busy.
- Feed. In general it is a good idea to put all option on the page. because some people can only do RSS, another atom, etc. just let reader choose. (From what I notice, it's about 1-2% of reader using feed actively)
--------
I should open a thread about trying to get audiance shouldn't I? that would be a fun little thread to have. Experiance to share.

Woo hoo! We're on Hype! Thank you!
About the Shins -- yes, I know about SubPop's crackdown, and even if I had any of the new songs now I wouldn't post them. I just don't think we're ever going to be in the position of having something that famous before anyone else. We're just really ordinary people who like this music.
There might be sometime when I'm asked to take down a link, and I will do it without any bad feelings.
I have to confess, that whole Feedburner account has me totally confused, but I'm trying to understand it. There were no 1-2-3 directions for beginners, so it was hard to figure out what I was supposed to do. I have subscribed to our blog so I can watch how it looks to others and make sure it keeps updating correctly. I haven't figured out the tools yet.
I'm much more comfortable with Site Meter for getting details of who visits. That's how I found out we are now listed on Hype--somebody linked to us from there!
YES to the idea of a thread about how to get and keep an audience. I'd be interested, and I would participate. I think that now our site should publish some songs and artists that will appear in the most popular searches so our name gets noticed..

Hi Squashed,
I came across this forum through a comment you made at BerkeleyPlace.
I was rejected by the Hype Machine, too, though I don't really know why.
Here's my blog.
About the requirements on the Submit page.
1. Well, my blog has been around for almost a year now, and I do post buy links and all. I think I pass this one.
2. Yes to both. There are comments, just not so many yet.
3.I already had FeedBurner. But I entered the feeds link Blogger provided when submitting my blog. I wasn't sure if it's still working or not.
About the 4 points you state:
1.Yes.
2.Well I have no idea how to make custom templates and all, so I use Blogger's template. But many blogs on Hype Machine don't have their own templates, either. Anyway, I do think I have a fancy sidebar.
3.Definitely not.
4.I'm already listed at Elbows, the blog has been mentioned on VH1's Best Week Ever blog a few times now (is it considered 'big'?), and it just hit the 100,000 page views mark. I already built relationship with a number of record labels/pr companies.
So what you think about my chances?
Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Zeon.

Zeon -
I looked at your blog, and it looks pretty good to me. Were you actually rejected by Hype, or did you just not get a response? That happened to us too. If you just didn't hear anything, try again and include your feed URL in the message.
Although being listed on Hype helped us a lot, it can also be the source of daily headaches when for some reason your posts aren't picked up or your tracks don't appear on the list. I'm pulling my hair out over those issues right now.
I sent you a friend request on MySpace.
We have only been blogging since last September, and it's been huge learning experience. Best of luck,

Well, actually, yes. Not Accepted. Twice. It hurt a bit.
Anyway, I'm just looking for a little more readers. I don't want to have a hidden agenda or anything, just spread the music I love whenever I feel like doing.

I know what you mean--it's a struggle to attract and keep readers. Those Best Week Ever referrals are exciting, but you're lucky if you gain one regular from all those hits. It hurts when you spend a lot of time on a post or have discovered a good new band, and no one reads it because they don't know it exists.
At this moment I'm writing, Hype is completely f'd up. No tracks have been loaded in the last 24 hours, and my own last two posts this week don't appear. There are no answers to my e-mails. My hit stats have plummeted. Meanwhile, the big blogs will hardly notice a blip. Elbows may not send as many references, but they seem more dependable, so for that you can be thankful.
I am trying to get registered on the Elbows Forum, which seems like a font of blogger information. Just lurking and reading has been informative. However, I've been waiting for four days for an e-mail about my login approval. I was hoping to get tips from the big guys there and be able to share with them when I think I have a really good post.
Sympathizing,

first of all, HM is big deal for blog, but at the same time don't take it like the point of it all. It's people talking, one guy, another guy, etc. It's not mysterious giant corporations or an elite super secret society rules. At least not yet. It could very well be Anthony is busy with his machine crashing, tweaking, flooded with email, etc... so.
In the meantime, my take about your blog. (I am not sure when you tried to submit it.)
- the giant google ad on top of main column must go. It makes your blog looks like a spam blog. (HM really hates that period) So try to move the giant google ad somewhere lese lower, or several smaller one. At least while you are in "pick me, pick me mode to HM)
- tweak the sidebar a little. (anything about personality, friends, other blogs go up. heavey doze of commercial goes down) spice it up somehow with little variation. (I think you can look HelloGina and Music is art side bar, for some idea, since your blog looks the closest to them)
- during the "look at me" period, try using fancier post design. (more pictures, serial posts, special posts, etc.) This is to avoid the "spamblog" look.
-------
okay after you think your blog first 2 pages looks damn good, go to elbow forum and request for HM addition. (don't forget to contribute conversation something in there too.)
also re-request HM again.

yeah HM is completely fubar right now. lol.
this is the part I say... well you know, don't just depends on one source.
my blog is small, but I also post on three other blogs.
my experiance:
- don't forget to go around and say hi to people, specially blog that is about the same size or smaller. This is if you like them and think you can have "group project", mutual link fest.
group project doesn't need to be super perfect, the point is to get to know people, explore new idea, new music, what's the other guy style, etc. have fun.
- post comment at big blog (with your name linked)
also, don't forget mp3 blog, is highly depended on HM/college students. So if you make plan for elaborate post, don't do it while everybody/your core audiance, is away for vacation. duh... It's obvious, but people often forget.
The biggest point, explore things, try variation. Big post, small silly post, big series, collaboration, etc. There is meat and potato post, but side show is fun for readers too. Look around, steal good idea.
built your own circle of blog friends and allies. They are the best, specially if the blog style is complementary and enrich both blogs.
---------
also, on sidebar and linking, if you know writer friends, photographer, smaller artist, or what not. link up once in a while. Get to know people... You'd be surprise.
